Beckford in Jamaica squad
published: Thursday | January 26, 2006

TEENAGE LEG-spinner Alton Beckford could make his regional first class debut as Jamaica made a number of changes to its team for the final preliminary round game against Guyana in the Carib Beer Series, starting at Chedwin Park tomorrow.

Beckford, who played one match in last October's KFC one-day tournament in Barbados, was selected ahead of fellow leg-spinner Odean Brown. Left-arm spinner Nikita Miller is nursing an injury.

Desperately in need of full points, Jamaica's batting will be strengthened by the return of Chris Gayle and Donovan Pagon, along with fast bowler Daren Powell who returned from his two-match suspension.

They replace opening batsmen Xavier Marshall and Brenton Parchment, along with middle order batsman Shawn Findlay and Miller from the team that lost to Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago on its recent tour.

Already out of contention to defend their league title, Jamaica are in fourth place on 12 points, 12 behind Barbados and Trinidad & Tobago (24 each) and one adrift the Leeward Islands (13). Guyana are also on 12 points while the Windward Islands are on 10.

Squad: Wavell Hinds (captain), Carlton Baugh Jr., Alton Beckford, David Bernard Jr., Gareth Breese, Chris Gayle, Tamar Lambert, Jermaine Lawson, Donovan Pagon, Daren Powell, Andrew Richardson, Marlon Samuels and Jerome Taylor.
