FORMER UNITED States Ambassador to Jamaica, Sue Cobb, is warning that the country must urgently address the current crime problems to secure continued growth in tourism and other areas.
According to Mrs. Cobb, if the problems are not dealt with swiftly, investments and other crucial economic activities would be curtailed.
Ambassador Cobb was speaking with The Gleaner following a lecture at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona campus, Thursday night.
"People will want to continue to come to beautiful places for sand and sun, but crime has got to be in a state where people are comfortable," she said.
Last year, Jamaica recorded more than 1,600 murders. Contacted yesterday, the Constabulary Communication Network (CCN) was not able to provide the total number of murders since the start of the year. The police information arm said however that Police Commissioner Lucius Thomas would be making a presentation on crime at a quarterly briefing next Tuesday.
