Teenager prioritises environment
published: Saturday | January 28, 2006

AT 20, Annick Rhone, has already made 10 years of significant contributions towards the development of Jamaica's environment.

Ms. Rhone is currently a student at the University College of the Caribbean, completing an associates degree in business administration. This, she says, is just a prelude to studying marine biology at the University of the West Indies.

She said from a tender age she was keenly interested in environmental issues. "Instead of the cartoon channel, the National Geographic Channel was my favourite, and the books I read were mostly those giving information on plants and animals," she explained.

It is this love for nature's beauty that led to Ms. Rhone's unanimous election as president of the environmental club at the St. Andrew High School for Girls.

At school, she initiated garbage collection competitions and recycling and beautification projects. Currently, Ms. Rhone volunteers as treasurer for the Student Environment Network, the Jamaica Environment Trust's youth arm.
