Question for the candidates If you were selected, who are some of the people who would be your close advisors?
published: Sunday | January 29, 2006

PETER PHILLIPS

This is not a matter about which there is any foregone conclusion. Choice will depend on the specific needs at a particular juncture.

The choice will, however, be guided by the following principles:

Finding the brightest and the best.

Individuals who bring a mixture of new ideas and creative thinking with valuable experience.

Building capacity for the future by identifying young professionals who can be mentored.

PORTIA SIMPSON MILLER

My advisers will reflect the priorities of my administration to deliver on the covenants with the Jamaican people. As you are aware, under our constitutional arrangements, the Cabinet is chief among the advisers. However, knowing that only prime ministers name Cabinets, you could not at this stage expect to hear any thoughts to do with Cabinet appointments. Suffice it to say, the PNP Government elected in October 2002 has just over two years before its mandate is constitutionally expired ... Let me add, however, that because my administration will be people-centred, I intend to have very close collaboration with my MPs in seeking policy advice. Councillors as representatives in their own rights, will be able to contribute to policy formulation and implementation and so they will be close advisers in advancing the community agenda. During this campaign, I have had volunteers from every professional area of life giving freely of their time and skill to develop policies and programmes for almost every area of public concern, as well as portfolio subjects. The country would be blessed if they were available to serve in advisory capacities. I will not get into names now, but my campaign has been blessed with several talented Jamaicans from academia, business professions and the voluntary social services.

OMAR DAVIES

There are too many outstanding matters on which such a determination would be made for any meaningful answer to be given at this stage.

The answer to the question about job creation is answered in the first answer in respect of the expansion of the small and micro-business sector.
