Three strikes and he won - Dexter Anderson, Trelawny

DEXTER ANDERSON put the national spotlight back on Bellevue Primary and Junior High when he won the Trelawny final of the Spelling Bee.

His father Darnett Anderson was integral in his son's development; buying him spelling books at a very early age.

"The Spelling Bee has taught me a lot of new words and has even helped me with my GSAT," says 12-year-old Dexter.

This was Dexter's third year competing. He finished fifth the first time and eighth last year. By his own admission, he might not have taken it seriously then. That's not the case now.

LOVING THE BOOKS

"I have to be slowing him down now. He gets up at 4:00 a.m. to study. I have to remind him to get his rest," Anderson laughs.

"I don't get tired because I'm used to it," retorts Dexter. He is even passing on his expertise to his little brother. Dexter wants to be either a pilot, mathematician or scientist.
