Businessman denied bail, may face new trial
published: Thursday | February 2, 2006

THE ST. ANDREW businessman whose murder case is pending in the Court of Appeal based on a recent Privy Council ruling has been denied bail.

Steven Grant, 34, of Queen Hill, St. Andrew, applied yesterday for bail in chambers at the Court of Appeal but Justice Algernon Smith refused the application.

The Privy Council set aside Grant's murder conviction last month and directed the Court of Appeal to decide whether he should face a new trial for the murder of 19-year-old Dunoon Technical High School student Kymani Bailey.

SHOT 13 TIMES

Bailey was shot 13 times outside the Asylum Nightclub, New Kingston about 4.30 a.m. on April 18, 1999.

Two of the wounds were to the front of the body while the others were to the back. The medical evidence was that the two wounds to the front of the body were not life-threatening.

Grant was convicted in February 2003 of the murder and sentenced to life imprisonment. The judge recommended that Grant serve 30 years before he was eligible for parole but he took his case to the UK Privy Council and the conviction was overturned.
