Simpson Miller too busy for debate
published: Friday | February 3, 2006

THE CAMPAIGN team for People's National Party (PNP) presidential candidate, Portia Simpson Miller, yesterday officially announced she would not participate in the proposed Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica (PSOJ)/Media Association of Jamaica (MAJ) presidential debate as a result of the uncertainty that continues to surround the event.

Team Portia noted that the initial date was January 31, but that a letter from the PSOJ requested a date change for some time between February 8 and 15.

SCHEDULE FINALISED

Team Portia indicated in a statement issued yesterday that its PNP presidential candidate had already finalised her engagements for the next three weeks with delegates across the island and overseas interests. The campaign team said that her schedule could not be changed to facilitate any other activity or event at this time.

Contacted by The Gleaner yesterday, Lola Fong Wright, PSOJ chief executive officer, said the organisation would not be commenting on the matter until it had received an official response from Team Portia.

The postponement of the debate is said to have been caused by the PSOJ's inability to secure sponsorship and advertisers to cover the high cost associated with TVJ hosting the event in its studios and broadcasting it live.
