SPELLING BEE FINALS: From junior mayor to champion speller
published: Friday | February 3, 2006

Andrene Hutchinson, Hanover

WINNING TITLES is nothing new for Andrene Hutchinson.

Andrene was dominating reading competitions in Hanover long before she entered the Spelling Bee. Now she adds that crown to her cabinet.

"I think I'll do well since I'm studying so hard. I'm working hard on the dictation," she says. Andrene was also junior mayor for Lucea, an opportunity that presented itself through her other passion - debating.

"There was a debate competition which I won and the mayor and his staff picked me to be junior mayor," she recalled.

"She's a very obedient child and intelligent. She always likes to help others and is close with elderly people," says her mother, Lucille Whyte.

Though she's in grade six, Andrene will not be doing the GSAT this year. She might return next year, but "that's my parents' decision". Andrene wants to attend Herbert Morrison High and later become a paediatrician.
