ART DIARY

Miniatures opens today at the JA-JA Originals Gallery off the Norman Manley Boulevard, Negril, Westmoreland. The exhibition features works by Christopher Gonzales, Robert Armstrong, lionel Spence, Lynval Whitelocke, Hampton Olfus, jr., Guggi Palache, Karl Ricketts and Rick Kevonian. The exhibition will run through to March 26, with an official opening planned for February 12 at 5:00 p.m.

Variety of Moods

Today, artist Kirkland Clarke presents Variety of Moods, a solo exhibition at Travellers' Beach Resort, Norman Manley Boulevard, Negril in Westmoreland. The show officially opens at 6:30 p.m. and runs until March 4. Over 33 new works by the artist will be displayed. For information, call Mr. Clarke at Okib Art Production, Tel: 460-0309.

February programme

The African Caribbean Institute of Jamaica /Jamaica Memory Bank (ACIJ/JMB) presents its annual February programme in observation of Black History Month. On February 9, Lonette Fisher of the Jamaica Intellectual Property Office, will deliver a lecture on 'Copyright laws and how they affect authors and users of literary works' at the Philip Sherlock Centre of the Performing Arts, University of the West Indies, Mona, starting at 10:00 a.m. Two other lectures are scheduled for February 14 and 16, and the final activity is a lunch hour concert on February 23 at the ACIJ//JMB, 12 Ocean Boulevard, downtown Kingston, starting at midday. 'Fusion' at Round Hill

Juliet Thorburn (with paintings) and Norma Rodney Harrack (with ceramics) present Fusion, an art exhibition opening at Round Hill Hotel and Villas, Montego Bay, St. James, on February 15 at 7:00 p.m. The show continues until February 21, with part proceed of sales donated to Hanover charities. Taino Transmissions

Taino Transmissions, a solo exhibition by Anna Ruth Henriques, continues at the Mutual Gallery and art Centre, 2 Oxford Road, Kingston 10. The show consists of postcard-sized canvasses and collages, reflecting on the Tainos, Jamaica's first original inhabitants. The exhibition runs until February 17.

Artists' gallery

Works by members of the Jamaica Guild of Artists continue to hang at their newly-opened gallery at Oakton House in Oakton Park, 5-7 Hagley Park Road, St. Andrew. Opening hours are Wednesday to Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and, on Sunday, from midday to 4:00 p.m. The gallery is closed on Monday and Tuesday.

Art and craft in schools

The national exhibition of art and craft in high, technical, and all-age schools is currently on in the exhibition hall of the Institute of Jamaica, 10-16 East Street, downtown Kingston. Entries on show include paintings, drawings, graphics, sculpture, collages and montages, woodwork, leatherwork, weaving, ceramics and metalwork from 20 schools islandwide.

Saturday art for children

Grosvenor Galleries, 1 Grosvenor Terrace, Kingston 8, presents an eight-week series of Saturday art and craft for children. These are scheduled every weekend from February 4 to March 25 at a cost of $8,00 per child, although weekly rates are available. The cost covers material for paintings, macrame, tye-and-dye, banners, personalised hardboard,hand-made painted clay masks, sculpture and many other art options. 'Intuitives 25'

Harmony Hall Gallery and Art Centre in Ocho Rios, St. Ann, is currently hosting its 25th annual exhibition, 'Intuitives 25', featuring the works of Jamaica's leading self-taught artists.

'Curators Eye II' continues

The Curators Eye II exhibition continues at the National Gallery of Jamaica in downtown Kingston, under the theme, 'Identity and History: Personal and Social Narratives in Art in Jamaica'. The exhibition features cutting-edge works from 16 of Jamaica's young, emerging artists on the international stage. They are Keisha Castello, Omari Ra, Khepera Oluyia Hatsheptwa, Oneika Russel, Oya Tyehimba, Shosana Fagan, Ebony Patterson, among others.
