The PM took home the CVM TV 2005 Newsmaker of the Year Awards at the Terra Nova Hotel on Thursday. The other nominees were Asafa Powell, Opposition Leader Bruce Golding (represented by Dr. Ronald Robinson) and Snr. Supt. of Police Reneto Adams.
The departing PM dedicated the award to the spirit of the Jamaican people and their resilience in a difficult 2005.
"We became our own sunshine when it rained in such an abundance. And in our moments of darkness, we reached for the light in our hearts," he said.
The awards was a smoothly run affair starting promptly at 1:00 p.m. as promised. Sam Wisdom and Company provided some soulful music during lunch before an energetic Samantha Gooden delighted with two selections "One Moment In Time" and "Three Little Birds " for which she elicited the help of the always willing Adams.
Milton Walker, managing editor of the CVM Communications Group, pointed out that there were not many women nominated by the public, and joked that one man actually nominated Mother Nature. President of the group, Dr. David McBean paid tribute to the news team especially for its dignified manner of reporting touchy issues, such as crime.
The award goes to the person or organisation that dominates the news and current affairs for that calendar.
