LETTER OF THE DAY - Bangarang for air and ground war
published: Monday | February 6, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

AS THE four contenders for the presidency of the PNP heighten their campaigns, there seems to be a war that has been initiated by the general of Team Portia's army who has recently joined. Mr. Colin Campbell, deputy General Secretary of the PNP, has taken leave of absence from the party to be head of the communications for Team Portia.

Mr. Campbell has declared himself to be head of the air war while other junior officials will head the ground war. This is suggesting that the other three contenders must ensure that their troops are well trained and equipped in order for any one of them to be victorious. However, Dr. Peter Philips, leader of the 'Solid as a Rock', team, has waved his white cloth begging for peace, as his team is not up for war at this time as they are more interested in strengthening the party troops.

AT LOGGERHEADS

Dr. Omar Davies and Dr. Karl Blythe have refused to be a part of this war, but instead, meet with the delegates on a one to one basis. For the past few months, 'Team Portia' and the 'Solid as a Rock' camp have been at loggerheads, with accusations thrown at each other. The PNP appears to be in disunity and disarray and whoever comes out as President will have a great task to undertake. While the bangarang continues in the PNP, the country's affairs have been put on hold while campaigning continues.

It is clear that the urge for power among the contenders has intensified and for now, it's all about who will get the top job. Could a bangarang like this ever happen in the PNP? Has this become a 'cock mouth kill cock' scenario? The media and supporters of the PNP have always sold this party as one that was built on good principles and standards, where all matters of conflict were dealt with internally. This is not playing out well in the PNP, because it is evident that when it comes to gaining power, lines are drawn and persons will do anything to gain power.

Portia Simpson seems to be withdrawing herself from the debate set up by the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica, but I think 'General' Colin Campbell should advise her to be a part of this forum to show Jamaica that she and her troops are ready for battle.

All we can do now is to wait and see who will emerge as the next President of the PNP until our next general election is announced and the roll is called up yonder as to who will be Jamaica's next Prime Minister.

I am, etc.,

ROOGAE KIRLEW

President of the Mt. Industry Youth

Club & Civic Association
