Smith claims big victory
published: Monday | February 6, 2006

Trecia Smith

JAMAICA'S WORLD triple jump champion Trecia Smith upset Russian Olympic champion Tatyana Lebedeva at the Governor's Cup meeting in Samara, Russia over the weekend.

In securing her first victory over Lebedeva in over a year, Smith, leapt an impressive 14.75 metres to win the triple jump.

Golden League Jackpot winner Lebedeva was the obvious fan favourite in the event, but Smith, who was a fourth place finisher at the Athens Olympic, disappointed the hundrers of home fans who crowded into the Sport Hall.

SECOND

The Jamaican prevailed with her fifth round 14.75m leap. Lebedeva managed a 14.61 jump to finish second, well ahead of Anna Pyatykh's 14.38m.

Meanwhile, Russia's Mariya Bolikova clocked a world-leading 7.04 seconds in the women's 60m.

Bolikova eclipsed her previous personal best 7.11 seconds, set three years ago. Her compatriot Larisa Kruglova was second in 7.14 seconds, with young Russian Olga Kholandyreva third (7.29).

Yuliya Tabakova had previously set the fastest time in the world this year, 7.08 seconds.
