THE EDITOR, Sir:
I write in response to Byron Buckley's article 'Going after drug money', published in The Sunday Gleaner of February 5, 2006. I want to thank Mr. Buckley for illuminating my darkness as to why the security forces were not nabbing the 'bigwigs' who, many Jamaicans suspect are involved in crime.
I realise now that the legislation was not in place to enable them to seize the assets of these persons.
I am concerned, however, about the tardiness of the select committee of both Houses of Parliament in expediting the passing of the bill to enable this law to be put into effect. According to Mr. Buckley, this bill went before this committee on "November 23 last year, the committee has not met since."
NOT GOOD ENOUGH
This is not good enough! The passing of this legislation should be treated with the greatest urgency. I encourage the Prime Minister to put pressure on this committee to meet and to ensure the passage of this bill as a part of his legacy to this nation.
We need to treat this matter with extreme urgency. Catching the little man who is employed by these masterminds is not enough. We need to get to the source of the problem.
I felt, when reading this article, that at last here is something that will give power and authority to the security forces to enable them to act with effectiveness and alacrity in stemming the hurricane of crime and violence in this our beautiful nation.
Mr. Prime Minister, please get this done.
I am, etc.,
ESTHER TYSON
