Lawre Johnson, Manchester - Sharpening her skills for final spelldown
published: Tuesday | February 7, 2006

JOHNSON

THE UNIFORM is different, but the champion remains the same.

Lawre Johnson from Bishop Gibson High retained the Manchester Parish title she won while at Mandeville Primary and Junior High in November 2004.

"My mother warned me against being overconfident (in the parish finals) because I might not win," she revealed. This year, she and her coach Primrose Swaby are looking more into the 'Unseen Words' to match the competition in the national final.

Lawre also benefits from the tutorship of former national champion Dr. Clive Lai, who makes sure she knows the spelling book inside out.

"There have been lots of improvements with Lawre. She's more confident and makes less simple mistakes," says her mother Marcia Johnson. She is confident Lawre will improve on her third-place finish last time.

Apart from the final, Lawre has been getting used to her first year in high school.

"I'm doing 12 subjects now and I'm just trying to manage them all," she says. Lawre wants to be a paediatrician.
