Vinessa McPherson, St. James - Mother has the magic touch
published: Tuesday | February 7, 2006

MCPHERSON

ALL VINESSA McPherson needed was a change of scenery.

The St. James champion for the Spelling Bee competed in Hanover in 2003, and placed eighth. This time, with her mother Sophia McPherson as coach, she triumphed.

"I always wanted to enter the Spelling Bee from I was in grade two," she said. Her school, Montego Bay High, doesn't offer a spelling programme, but her parents decided the challenge wasn't too great and asked permission for Vinessa .

Having her mom as coach, Vinessa's case is quite unique. Parents usually take an active part in their children's spelling, but this is the ultimate.

Maybe Mrs. McPherson might churn out more champions of her own.
