UNDER THE STEWARDSHIP of Professor Ishenkumba Kahwa, the UWI Chemistry Department's Hazardous Materials Team has made great strides on the local environmental scene. Also known as the Hazmat Team, the group maintains a sense of environmental responsibility and continues to seek ways in which they can make a contribution to improving the health and well being of Jamaica's environment. Their work has been supported by the Environmental Foundation of Jamaica (EFJ).
Elva Clarke (Research Assistant)
Elva Clarke got her B.Sc. (Honours) in Chemistry and Applied Chemistry from the UWI Mona then proceeded to teach at the Montego Bay High School for Girls where she taught chemistry and physics. She later moved on to Industrial Chemical Company (ICC) where she obtained valuable industrial practical experience as quality control coordinator.
Ms Clarke joined the Department of Chemistry as Research Assistant to develop Jamaica's first Inventory of Hazardous Materials and Waste. Ms Clarke is now the key researcher for the Hazardous Materials in the Informal Sector project supported by the UWI and had previously worked on the Reduction of Chemical Stockpiles at Jamaica Customs project.
Ahunna Jane Arimah (Junior Research Fellow)
Mrs. Ahunna Jane Arimah is no stranger to environmental issues. She holds a Master of Science in Environmental Sciences and also in Geographical Information Systems (GIS) from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria where her research project was on lead pollution.
Jane joined the Chemistry Department in September 2003 as a Junior Research Fellow working on the EFJ sponsored National Hazardous Material and Waste Inventory Project.
