Sex education a must
published: Thursday | February 9, 2006

VICE-PRESIDENT of the National Secondary Students Council, Tamian Beckford, is urging the Ministry of Education to insist that all secondary schools adopt the Reform of Secondary Education (ROSE) curriculum.

According to him, some schools are not following the curriculum and as a result, the HIV and Sexual Reproductive Health programmes are not being pursued. Mr. Beckford was speaking at the United Nations Population Fund Regional Youth Advisory Group meeting at the Terra Nova Hotel in Kingston last week.

"Within the current education system, there is sexual reproductive health education that is outlined and infused into the curriculum. However, this inclusion and infusion is only a part of the Reform of Secondary Education Programme," he explained. Minister of State in the Ministry of Education, Dr. Donald Rhodd, said that he would be launching an investigation to find out which schools were not following the Ministry's ROSE curriculum.
