Another dark day in the Old Capital
published: Friday | February 10, 2006

Angry residents mounted roadblocks in several sections of Oxford Road in Spanish Town yesterday. Firefighters were kept busy extinguishing several fires at the roadblocks. - NORMAN GRINDLEY/DEPUTY CHIEF PHOTOGRAPHER

IT WAS another tense day in Spanish Town, St. Catherine, yesterday, after a series of chaotic events that unfolded there on Wednesday, following the shooting death of Andrew 'Bun Man' Hope, the reputed leader of the notorious 'One Order' gang.

Late Wednesday night, the probation office on Burke Road was firebombed, causing extensive damage to the building and two cars parked on the compound.

Early yesterday morning, protesters along Young Street and Brunswick Avenue hurled rocks at passing motor vehicles.

DELIVERY TRUCK ATTACKED

A delivery truck making its way along Brunswick Avenue was pounced upon by the rock throwers. The windshield of the truck was broken and the driver was forced to abandon the vehicle and flee on foot. He was rescued by a passing motorist.

The old courthouse at the corner of Young and Wellington streets that was set ablaze by the protesters on Wednesday, was still being scrapped by looters yesterday. They made off with sheets of zinc, wood and metal and almost anything else they could get their hands on.

Two persons were arrested and charged with larceny and are scheduled to face the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court.
