SCJ's cricket semi-finals on tomorrow
published: Saturday | February 11, 2006

A SECOND attempt will be made to play the semi-final matches in the 2006 Sugar Company of Jamaica (SCJ) Westmoreland limited-overs cricket competition tomorrow.

Heavy overnight rain in Westmoreland made the pitch and outfield at Mannings School unplayable while there was significant seepage of water under the covers on to the pitch at Allan Rae Oval last week.

In tomorrow's matches, Mase-mure face Frome at Allan Rae Oval while Paradise tackle Retreat at the Mannings School. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m.

TIED ON POINTS

Masemure and Paradise ended the preliminary round of the competition with 17 points each, Retreat had 12 and Frome eight.

Last week's rainy day effectively put a damper on the expected fireworks between defending champions Masemure and Frome who came with all their 'big guns'. Jerome Wauchope, Andre John-stone, Ray Williams, Jermaine Stennett and Julio Allen were vowing to stop Masemure in their tracks.

When both teams met in the preliminary round, Frome were skittled out for the paltry 86 in reply to Masemure's 228 for 9.

TIME OFF

After that game, Frome's manager, Preston Barnes, said: "Five of our top players asked for time off as whatever the result in the match, we would have qualified for the semis."

"Those five were at the Oval on Sunday to try and put Masemure out of the competition and they will be back again this Sunday to do just that".

The match between Paradise and Retreat is also eagerly anticipated as Paradise had to dig deep to defeat Retreat when they last met.

Retreat made 250 but, with 10 overs to go and a run rate of nine runs per over, Paradise romped home, making 251 with five balls to spare on the back of some hard hitting by their batsmen. Retreat were runners-up last year.

The final is set for Belle Isle next Sunday.
