Robert Bryan, executive director of the Local Organising Committee for CWC '07. - FILELOCAL ORGANISERS are very comfortable with the rate developments are taking place at the Greenfield site in Trelawny.
"Trelawny is progressing quite well," noted Robert Bryan, executive director of Jamaica Cricket 2007, the Local Organising Committee (LOC). "I'd say we're ahead of schedule because by February 15, grass will be planted and we will be irrigating the field. The stands are also progressing well."
His views were supported by Pauline Nelson, the LOC's communications manager.
"They're putting in the last layer of sand before planting the grass. The pitch is already done, so we don't have a problem with Trelawny.
"What we're hoping to do, and what will happen, is that some domestic matches will be played there this year," said Nelson of the facility earmarked for hosting the opening ceremony and warm-up matches.
TEAMS REPRESENTED
All participating teams will be represented at the opening ceremony which is scheduled for Sunday, March 11, 2007.
The first practice game is set for Monday, March 5 next year between the West Indies and Kenya, to be followed by others on Tuesday, March 6 between India and the Netherlands; Thursday, March 8 with Kenya versus the Netherlands and Friday, March 9 between India and the Windies. The multi-purpose stadium is being built at a cost of US$34 million with a US$3m overlay for 10,000 permanent seats, while an additional 15,000 will be installed for the World Cup.
"We're building two stands. One is being built by the Chinese company COMPLANT and the other is being built by the sub-contractor," Nelson stated.
The sub-contractors are from the Jamaican company, CFC Construction
"The Chinese one is progressing well," she said. "They are now pouring concrete into the seating bowl and within another couple weeks they will start pouring into the other stand. Trelawny's going exceptionally well. "
