'Class of '73' starts rural tour
published: Sunday | February 12, 2006

Oliver Samuels

THE THEATRICAL production which theatre critic Tanya Batson-Savage says 'presents a healthy serving of laughter the proverbial sugar to make the medicine go down', kicks off its rural tour on the weekend of February 18/19.

The Jamaica National Money Transfer-sponsored production, takes the fun and excitement to hotel Versalles, May Pen, on Saturday, February 18, with one performance at 8:00 p.m. Then on Sunday, February 19, it will be at the Montego Bay Community College on Alice Eldemire Drive in the western city, for a solo performance at 7:00 p.m.

The musical comedy has been playing to full houses at its home base Centrestage Theatre since its world premier on December 26 last year. Critics and audience members alike have been hailing the Patrick Brown penned 'Class of '73' as one of the most entertaining of the annual Jambiz Christmas productions, this being the 9th in the series.

The performance in Montego Bay will see part proceeds going to St. James High School, as a part of Jambiz's outreach programme, whereby deserving charities, churches and educational institutions are given an opportunity to raise well-needed funds.

IMPRESSIVE CAST

'Class of '73' boasts an impressive cast headed by Oliver Samuels and Glen 'Titus' Campbell. Samuels plays B.B. Bring the new teacher of class 6Z at Ackee Tree All-Age, while Campbell once more tackles multiple roles. His main role is that of Milo, along with a supporting performance as Drop Short, the school's principal. The rest of the supporting cast features Courtney Wilson as Mutombo, Camille Davis doubling up as Raquel and Hatti-Hattie, and Sharee McDonald-Russell as Phoebe.

The cast perform as a well-rehearsed ensemble on stage, displaying expert directing by the wily veteran, Trevor Nairne. Jon Williams again shows his genius with some lively, bouncy and entertaining musical scores, which serve to enhance Barbara McDaniel's picturesque choreography.

Patrons in Kingston will be pleased to know that 'Class of '73' will still play at Centrestage mid-week, with performances Tuesdays to Fridays at 8:00 p.m. each evening.
