LETTER OF THE DAY - Pyrrhic victory
published: Sunday | February 12, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

OUR COUNTRY Jamaica has so many problems, the latest being that of Spanish Town, and it is really a mind-boggling experience to realise that the persons who are aspiring to lead our country are adding to our problems.

I really wonder if the four aspirants to take over the leadership of the PNP are conscious of the damage they are doing, and how much the whole country is fed up with their shenanigans? Look what happened in Spanish Town yesterday, the portfolio of one of the aspirants, but these aspirants were busy infighting. This definitely is not on, and they should sit down and face facts and give the country a chance. Do not be the cause of more trauma for us.

A PARTY MATTER

Am I too naïve to think that appointing a new leader is a party matter and should be kept out of the press etc. I really believe that it is a shame for these aspirants to be spending so much money on this election and that they really should not be taking any funds from the private sector as this is very dangerous, as if and when they get into power, their hands will be tied because of the pieces of silver they have taken. Why can't they just visit, without a motorcade, the delegates wherever they are in the island and sell themselves?

The delegates should also ensure that no funds or other favours are passed and by doing this, would send a clear message to the country that they are not in favour of corruption. This is what Dr. Blythe is doing and is proof that this method can work. The aspirants may well realise that whomsoever becomes leader may have achieved a pyrrhic victory, as the party may not form the next government. Something to think about, is it not?

Do you also notice that each aspirant has a dream of how to run this country? They all have been in the House of Representatives for 14 years. Why did not each aspirant liaise with their other colleagues to do a think tank on these dreams and put them into action? Why only now are we being told about your dreams? Our Prime Minister, with not a smile on his face, advised that the dreams were all contained in the party's manifesto.

I am, etc.,

BARBARA COVER
