Naming schools
published: Tuesday | February 14, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

WHEN I WAS YOUNG, my father Sydney S. Brown Sr. always talked of the high school he went to during the '30s - St. Simon's College on East Street. He mentioned several famous Jamaicans who went there at about the same time ... Archbishop Carter, Hector Wynter, Hugh Shearer, Louise Bennet, G. Arthur Brown and many others. After the death of the founder, a Mr. E. Hazlewood from Guyana, the school closed. It would be great if one of the new high schools be named after the original so that the name does not die, considering that so many Jamaicans got a superior education when higher education was so limited.

Another school I remember growing up hearing about was Buxton High near South Camp Road and East Queen Street. Several people I know remember Mr. Buxton Thompson, the headmaster whose educational skills were legendary.

I am sure it would give joy and memories if new schools were named after these illustrious people.

I am, etc.,
