THE EDITOR, Sir
I want to congratulate the Government and the Opposition of Jamaica for considering hearing the submissions of religious groups regarding the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
I would also like to warn Jamaica that the day it turns its back on God will be the day it sows the seeds of its own destruction. Faith in God gives human beings an evolutionary advantage that has served man from prehistoric times on the savannah. In the face of many threats faith made the caveman overcome.
The morals of human society are heavily dependent on religious values having a benign effect on nations. Without them many people would tend to satisfy primitive impulses which are often unpleasant and today considered taboo.
LONGER LIFE
It is true that religion can cause trouble, but let's not lose sight of the good it has done. For example, science has shown religious people live longer, have better marriages and are less prone to illness. Europe with a secular humanist culture is on average tending to higher divorce rates, low birth rates, increased dissatisfaction with body image, increased anxiety regarding the future, etc. As knowledge increases we will come to understand God better, and this will filter through to how we treat each other and how we live in alignment with God.
Jamaica must never lose its battle. This nation will move forward with confidence, assertiveness and fearlessness provided we stay true to our principles.
I am, etc.,
