Lucozade Sport scholarships for two leading local athletes
published: Friday | February 17, 2006

TWO OUTSTANDING locally-based athletes can qualify for Lucozade Sport scholarships this year. Robeth Streete, marketing manager (Caribbean) of GlaxoSmithKline Limited, announced yesterday that the scholarships will go to a male and female athlete who compete with distinction at the Gibson Relays, the annual Boys' and Girls' Championships and the National Championships.

According to Streete, her company has developed a partnership with the University of Technology (UTech) which has an advanced programme for local athletes.

"One (scholarship) will be awarded to a male and the other to a female who must also meet UTech's matriculation requirements," she said at a press briefing held at the company's head office on Beechwood Avenue.

The awardees of these Lucozade scholarships will benefit from a four-year sponsorship provided they maintain a satisfactory scholastic record throughout their course of study. The full value of both scholarships is $2 million.

SPONSORSHIP FOR MILE EVENT

Lucozade Sport will also sponsor the mile event for the second consecutive year and the Class One boys 4x200m at the February 25 Gibson Relays.

Teddy McCook, the chairman of Gibson Relays, congratulated GlaxoSmithKline and UTech on their bold initiative.

"This is an indication that Lucozade is satisfied that we can prepare athletes in Jamaica for the highest level of competition," McCook said.

Also present at yesterday's press briefing were Wolmer's principal and chairman of the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association's (ISSA) athletics committee Dave Myrie and Jamaica Amateur Athletics Association (JAAA) executive member Ludlow Watts.
