Sunshine Girls squad get picked today
published: Friday | February 17, 2006

Paul-Andre Walker, Staff Reporter

WITH JUST a couple of weeks before their sojourn to Australia and the Commonwealth Games, Jamaica's Sunshine Girls squad will be picked today.

Based on what The Gleaner observed during the team's final practice series heading into the Commonwealth Games, a good guess as to the line-up is not hard to come by.

In the shooting circle and just outside, Oberon Pitterson's choices are clear.

SURE PICK

Of course the captain and one of the most experienced members of the team, Elaine Davis, is a sure pick at goal shoot. Joining her at goal attack will be the energetic, aggressive and wily Simone Forbes. Romelda Aiken did not play much against England and has suffered a little from the 'big occasion syndrome' her talent is unmistakable, making her more than a passing note when selections are finalised today.

SAFEST HANDS

Jodi-Ann Ffrench, despite her diminutive stature in the attacking zone, has the safest hands in the country and offers a difference coming off the bench. She should also figure in Jamaica's squad.

Latoya Thomas has been a little shaky but when she plays well there is no doubt that she has what it takes to be a part of Jamaica's new-look set-up.

Energy and dedication are traditional keys in Jamaica's defensive unit. Sasher-Gaye Henry has proven that she can provide that intensity and will be amply supported by Kasey Evering and Nichala Gibson. Young Nicole Aiken should also make the squad.

In the centre-court, Nadine Bryan has been the most consistent player in the country for many years. She is expected to continue in the same vein come time for the Commonwealth Games. Tivoli's Peter-Gaye Thomas has been quickly rising to fill Bryan's shoes and will make the trip as well.

At wing attack, Marion Campbell has been silky smooth.
