published: Saturday | February 18, 2006

Anthony Foster, Freelance Writer

Michael Frater, Brigitte Foster-Hylton, Sherone Simpson and Jermaine Gonzales are the star attractions listed for today's fifth staging of the UWI Invitational Track Meet to be held at the National Stadium.

World Championship 100m silver medallist Frater will line-up in the 400m, Foster-Hylton, the 100m hurdles bronze medallist in the women's 100m, and Olympic Games sprint relay gold medallist Simpson will face the starter in the 200m.

Gonzales, a world junior 400m bronze medallist, should start in the 400m.

Other members of the Stephen Francis-coached MVP Track Club down to run are national 400m champion Sherika Williams, national junior 400m hurdles record holder Gregory Little, Nyoka Cole, Winston Smith and Ainsley Waugh.

other athletes

A number of other athletes from the High Performance Training Centre (HPTC) which is based at the University of Technology, who are coached by national sprint coach Glen Mills, will also participate. They include locals Kiel Brown and Nigel Bolton.

Meanwhile, Abassey Ralph of St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Grenadian Dervin Bowen, both members of the HPTC, along with Trupial Track Club from Curacao and a team from the UWI Cave Hill campus in Barbados, will add regional flavour to the meet.

Several of the island's top school teams are also expected to participate.

Unlike previous years, the increasing number of participants has forced organisers to move to the National Stadium East complex.

Chairperson of the organising committee, Olympian Grace Jackson, said:

"Last year we had over 1600 participants, but this year we expect to exceed the 2000 athletes barrier.

"The organising committee would like to thank all it's sponsors who continue to share the vision of connecting out people through sport," Jackson, an Olympic 200m silver medallist, added.

Events to be contested are 3000m, 5000m, 100m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 4x100m, 4x400m, long jump, triple jump and high jump. There will be an invitational 200m for clubs/institutions and overseas participants.

All events are time final.

Pepsi/Gatorade and Puma were joined by Carimed and Cable & Wireless as this year's sponsors.
