Ruddock, Smith leap to glory at Hurdles Fest
published: Sunday | February 19, 2006

Ruddock

ST. JAGO'S Natasha Ruddock and Wolmer's Akeen Smith shone brightly under the lights at Friday night's Hurdles Fest held at the National Stadium East complex.

In the Pepsi/Gatorade, Plexus, APM Terminal, NHT and Sherwin Williams-sponsored meet, Ruddock's performance was the most impressive of the evening.

Running against Class One opposition for the first time, the World Youth silver medallist destroyed her opponents to win in an impressive 13.68 seconds.

As a second-year Class Two athlete, Ruddock's time bettered the former Vere student Astia Walker's 13.7 Class One Champs record, although she was timed by hand.

Ruddock's time also signalled that former St. Jago student Melaine Walker's Class Two record of 13.52 should be history after next month's Champs.

PACE TOO HOT

Vere's Indira Spence, who challenged Ruddock at the 60m mark, but found the pace too hot in the last 80 metres and finished second in 13.75 while Immaculate's Kimberly Laing (14.74) was third.

Meanwhile, Smith, who recently transferred from Morant Bay High to Wolmer's, led from start to finish in dominating the boys' Class One 110m hurdles field to win in an impressive 13.85.

JC's Andre Collins was second in 14.11 while Andrew Riley of Calabar was third in 14.17.

In the Class Two event, Alpha's pair of Shermaine Williams (13.71) and Rose-Marie Carty (13.89) finished one-two while the Kingston College pair of Kerrion Stewart (13.80) and Andre Peart (14.25) dominated the boys' category.

In the 300m hurdles, Carty (43.83) turned the tables on her teammate, Williams (45.31), who finished third. St. Jago's Yanique Haye (45.00) was second.

Alpha's Latoya James (11.98) won the girls' 80m Class Three event while D'Omar Bayden of KC (14.05) took the 100m hurdles.
