Performer of the week - Sinclair's sensational rise
published: Sunday | February 19, 2006

- FILE
Kenia Sinclair ... has started the 2006 season in red-hot form by smashing her own indoors' 800m record in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

KENIA SINCLAIR made her breakthrough on the international circuit last year in what turned out to be a successful debut season.

During the season, the former St. Jago High student achieved three landmarks, first by breaking the national indoor 800m record, then the outdoor mark and then rounded off the year with a sub two-minute clocking (1:58.88), the first Jamaican woman to run under one minute, 59 seconds (1:59.00).

Like last season, Sinclair has started this year with a bang by lowering her national indoor record to 2:01.81 seconds and removing her own previous mark of 2:01.95, set a year ago in Gainsville, Florida.

LEFT IN HER WAKE

Sinclair left in her wake Americans Alice Schmidt (2:03.50) and Hazel Clarke (2:03.63) at the Tyson Invitational meet in Fayetteville, Arkansas, which easily gave her The Gleaner Top Performer of the Week (February 9-16).

Despite her impressive run, Sinclair is the 10th fastest athlete over the distance indoors this season. Sinclair also registered a win at the 99th Millrose Games in New York on February 3.

With the outdoor season yet to start, Sinclair, a Seton Hall graduate, is expected to lower her personal best and national 1:58.88. She will also be looking to win a medal at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia in March.
