Customs broker held in fraud scheme not charged
published: Monday | February 20, 2006

THE POLICE are yet to formally charge the 32-year-old customs broker who was taken into custody on the weekend amid investigations into a money laundering and drug-ring operating between Jamaica and the United States.

"He's still in custody. He was questioned yesterday and questioning will further continue tomorrow (Monday)," Inspector Steve Brown of Operation Kingfish told The Gleaner yesterday.

On Friday night members of Operation Kingfish seized two luxury vehicles - an Escalade and a Mercedes Benz SUV - from residences in the West-meade Housing Scheme and Bridgeview in Portmore. Both vehicles are registered in the customs broker's name. The Special Anti-Crime Task Force also seized about US$13,000 ($845,000) and over $230,000 in local currency.

The police say the detention of the broker and the seizure of the vehicles follow investi-gations with American law enforcement officers on a money laundering and drug ring between the United States and Jamaica. An arrest was made in the U.S. two weeks ago.

Since he has not been formally charged, the police are withholding the broker's name.

Inspector Brown explained that the customs broker was detained on "reasonable suspicion".

"We are questioning him about where the vehicles came from, and how he came into possession of the money. We are following some leads," he said.
