WATERHOUSE FOOTBALL Club yesterday continued to make the 2005-06 Wray and Nephew National Premier League into a contest when they defeated Village United 2-1 at Elleston Wakeland Centre in Falmouth.

With the win Waterhouse reduced the points differential to two on one-time runaway leaders Harbour View. At one point in the season Harbour View's lead appeared impregnable as they led by as many as 15 points and many began to compare it to what obtains in the English Premier League with Chelsea.

Yesterday's win came courtesy of goals from Demar Phillips in the 47th minute and Kevin Lamey in the 67th from the penalty spot. Fabian Dawkins hit back for Village in the 69th minute to take his season's tally to 17, one behind the competition's leader Lamey, who has 18.

It was a competitive and hard-fought game with the visitors always seeming to be a bit sharper. Their only letdown, in the first half, was that they seemed incapable of scoring as Lamey, Jomo Gordon and Vincent Earle could have found the net.

LACKING IN INSPIRATION

While Waterhouse looked good, Village appeared lacking in inspiration, with the main idea appearing to be to get the ball to Dawkins. Dawkins tried his best but lacked quality support, especially from his strike partner Teofore Bennett.

Waterhouse adjusted themselves in the second half and took the lead within two minutes of the resumption. Gordon's cross was met by Phillips' left boot and Elvis Hart had no chance. Nineteen minutes later it was 2-0.

Lamey, who looked sharp and caused trouble all evening, befuddled Omroy Wilson who fouled him in the box, leaving referee Victor Stewart no choice but to award a penalty. Lamey duly converted.Showing his opportunism, Dawkins tucked home a left-footer with one touch from a ball swung in from the right back position by substitute Damion Newton.

With the goal Village sprung to life but they were unable to get back in. Waterhouse continued to create chances and could have extended their lead but for the brave keeping of Hart.

"Through Christ all things are possible. We came here today to win this game. We came here knowing that Village are a team that do pretty well on their field. However, I think we came through the flanks and ended up with two goals," said a pleased Waterhouse coach Wayne Fairclough.Village's Cassman Williams thought that the scoreline reflected what took place on the field.

"I think it was an evenly contested game. Both teams played well and hard throughout the duration of the game. Waterhouse I think created more scoring opportunities than us and I think they deserved to win the game," Williams said.
