WESTERN BUREAU:

GRANVILLE FC defied the odds on Saturday afternoon when goals by Llandel Fisher and Damion Reid gave them a 2-0 win over mid-season champions Negril in the second end- of-round final in the 2005-06 Captain's Bakery Western Super Football League at the Rusea's High School grounds, in Lucea.

"Getting goals was our main problem in the early stages of the competition and we knew that once we conquered that problem we would be okay," said Granville's coach Tracy Reid, the only female coach in the competition. "Our task is now to win the competition and qualify for National Premier League eliminations."

In what was a fiercely contested game, Granville stole the early initiative and took the lead after six minutes. Midfield star Jason Rose laid on a perfect pass to veteran Fisher and his powerful grounder bounced off the hands of the diving goalkeeper and crashed into the goal, making the score 1-0.

BACK-TO-BACK CHANCES

Negril bounced back smartly and created two back-to-back chances in the 10th and 12th minutes but both were wasted.

Towards the end of the half, Granville again took charge, forcing back Negril with relentless attacks, especially through the fleet-footed Odaine Snow who scooped a sweet lob over the head of the advancing goalkeeper, but an alert defender cleared the danger.

In the second half, Negril wasted a glorious chance in the opening seconds when Oniel Campbell slipped between two Granville defence but he dribbled into an awkward position and then cracked his shot wide of the target.

With action swinging from end to end, Granville doubled their lead in the 62nd minute as Reid pounced on a bouncing ball before the goal and with the defence already in disarray, nodded past the helpless goalkeeper, making the score 2-0.
