Jamaica, there is hope for us
published: Wednesday | February 22, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

JAMAICA IS said to be the land of beauty and sunshine. It is viewed as the country everyone wishes to come to because of its beauty and the warmth of its people. This image has, however, changed with the upsurge of violence in many areas in Jamaica. A lot of people say that nothing can be done to curb the violence now plaguing our land. As a very young person who travels extensively and has spoken to many Jamaicans abroad, a lot can be done and a lot needs to be done.

A number of Jamaicans have established themselves in many countries around the world. These persons when contacted do not see these foreign lands as their home, but wish to come back, set up their business in the country and reside. It, however, is difficult for them to do so because of the red tape set up in the Jamaican political system.

GOOD JOB

Although I commend Mr. Patterson and the People's National Party on the strides they have made towards community and economical development, there is much needed work to be done. The country has become so infiltrated with corruption from the top straight down.

The domino effect of this corruption is heart-rending. With the exit of The Most Honourable Percival James, the prospects for returning residents seem dismal.

Jamaicans, the ball is in our court to ensure that our country returns to its strength and resilience. Let's put our best foot forward and start playing our part.

I am etc.,
