THE EDITOR, Sir:
I HAVE read in your competitor newspaper of the 'fact' that Air Jamaica lost close to US$140 million in 2005.
This after Dr. Lawrence spent US$250 million of the Jamaican taxpayer's money to 'fix' the airline - with a promise that the loss in 2005 would be less than the US$99 million loss in 2004.
Dr. Omar Davies, who aspires to run the country, has promised losses capped at US$30 million.
I understand the losses for 2006 are budgeted at over US$60 million. Can this insanity continue without any oversight, control or transparency?
VIABILITY OPTION
There is an option available - for viability - for a vibrant airline industry in the Caribbean. It is cooperation; not rocket science - simple cooperation.
It has been analysed to death but no politician from Trinidad to Kingston has the basic decency or guts to force the airlines to sit down and come up with a viable plan.
I wish you all well - as I have always done - but fear the worst. You deserve better politicians than you appear to have elected.
I am, etc.,
