MEMBERS OF Jamaica's Under-20 female football team which reached the semi-finals of the CONCACAF World Cup play-offs in Mexico last month were presented with certificates at a reception held at the Pegasus Hotel on Monday night.

The girls were first presented with certificates for winning the Caribbean Football Union title and then for advancing to the final four of the CONCACAF round where they lost 4-1 to Canada.

Portia Simpson Miller, Minister of Local Government, Community Development and Sports, lauded the girls for the achievement.

"The Reggae Girlz took us on a journey that they could not quite complete ... on Saturday (at the Peoples' National Party's special delegates' conference). I am going to complete that journey for them," she said of her ambitions to become the leader of the party.

"Congratulation once again. We love you girls," Simpson Miller said.

Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) president Crenston Boxhill said his organisation would start to place special emphasis on female football.

"We will be talking with the parish associations to find out what we can do to help with women's football," Boxhill said.

He said the JFF wanted to see girls playing at the primary and prep schools level. The president also called on the media to help promote the women more.

At the reception, also attended by former Prime Minister Edward Seaga, singer Wayne Marshall was on show to entertain the girls.
