PROFILE: Dr. Timothy Stitt - From Ireland to Jamaica
published: Thursday | February 23, 2006

STITT

BORN 1975 in Northern Ireland, Dr. Stitt was the second of two children. Tim grew up in Belfast, playing football (at one time he even considered football trials with Glasgow Rangers). While he dreamed of becoming an Egyptologist and learnt to read hieroglyphics in the process, he is currently a full-time lecturer in computer science within the Department of Computer Science and Mathematics at the University of the West Indies. His research interests span the field of high-performance scientific computing and emerging grid computing frameworks. Tim was awarded his Ph.D. in high-perfor-mance scientific computing in 2005 from Queen's University Belfast, Northern Ireland.

EDUCATION

He attended Annandale Grammar School in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and completed his A'Levels at Wellington College Belfast, where he received A's in computer science and mathematics. Tim then moved to the Queen's University in Belfast, where he was awarded a first-class honours degree in computer science. After a year of postgraduate work at the University of St. Andrews, Scotland, Tim visited Jamaica in 2001 with his wife (who was born in Jamaica) and instantly fell in love with the country and its beauty. After a few months, he and his family relocated to Jamaica after obtaining employment at the University of the West Indies. Since then, he has completed a part-time Ph.D. in computer science from Queen's University Belfast, where he studied as an undergraduate.
