THE CHINESE Government's provision of US$380,000 (J$25 million) worth of military equipment to the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) has been well received, at a crucial time, to help the army enhance the development and efficiency of its operations.
Chinese Ambassador Zhao Zhenyu, said yesterday that this was another step in strengthening the diplomatic relations between China and Jamaica.
He presented a supply of military wear and equipment to the JDF during a brief function held at Up Park Camp yesterday.
The donation was the second made to the JDF as the first set of goods totalling US$250,000 (J$16.5 million) was delivered two years ago.
Ambassador Zhao, who has been residing in Jamaica for about three years, said China was pleased to have assisted the JDF with its refurbishing.
Noting that three JDF soldiers have also received training in China, he said: "We will continue to accept the Jamaica Defence Force officers in China for military training."
STRONGER RELATIONS
The Chinese Ambassador told The Gleaner that he was satisfied that there now existed stronger relations between the Chinese and Jamaican military forces.
"It is more vibrant and there is more vigour and vitality with our relationship," he said. "In addition, we have more projects and more exchange visits, not only by Jamaica's national leaders but by military and cultural groups."
Rear Admiral Hardley Lewin, the JDF chief of staff, said the army was satisfied with the Chinese donation which included two tents, one to be used as a command post and the other for medical purposes.
The other supplies were 500 bullet-proof helmets, uniform material, and 1,500 pairs of combat boots, respirators, digital cameras and projectors.
Rear Admiral Lewin said the JDF was delighted to have developed relations with China's Ministry of Defence. A JDF delegation visited China last year as guests of that government.
Major Danielle Davis, the commanding officer for the JDF Supply Depot, said the donation would assist greatly in reducing the army's budgetary expenses. She said the Chinese Government requested that the JDF furnish it with a list of items needed.
