Views on Charter change
published: Thursday | February 23, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I AM pressed to write to you to vent my strong and burning feelings in connection with the proposed change of 'The Charter of Rights Bill' by the Joint Select Committee, to Section 21 of the Jamaican Constitution.

My seven observations are: (1) too simplistic; (2) too ambiguous; (3) open for different interpretations officially; (4) six for 26 (approximately 26 lines of the Jamaican Constitution were replaced by six lines of the Charter of Rights Bill); (5) the current rights of the Constitution have not been fully reinstated;

(6) we cannot compromise on the Constitution; (7) urgent need for further rectification.

The aim of the Joint Select Committee has been missed. It should not be deemed a shame to go back to the drawing board and beg God for wisdom, with prayers.

I am, etc.,

NEVILLE HAMILTON
