published: Thursday | February 23, 2006

( L - R ) POWELL AND SMITH

WORLD 100 METRES record holder Asafa Powell and world triple jump champion Trecia-Kaye Smith are set to walk away with the RJR Sports Found-ation's 2005 Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year awards tonight.

The annual function is set for the Jamaica Pegasus hotel at 7:00 p.m.

During the 2005 season, Powell ran the three fastest times over 100m, which included his 9.77 world record on June 14 in Athens Olympic Stadium.

He also had times of 9.84 and 9.85, the second and third best times of 2005. On June 13, Powell climbed to the top of the men's overall track and field rankings, a first by a Jamaican.

Smith's performances over the year were also special. She became the first Jamaican to win a field event gold medal when she leapt a world-leading 15.11 metres to win a World Champ-ionship gold in Helsinki, Finland.

BEST JUMPS

In the final, Smith had the three best jumps - 15.11, 15.01 and 14.91. These performance helped Smith to end the season as the world's second-ranked triple jumper.

Michael Frater, who won silver in the 100m at the World Championships, and West Indies cricketer Chris Gayle should find themselves in the top three.

Sprint hurdlers Delloreen Ennis-London and 2003 winner Brigitte Foster-Hylton, World Championships silver and bronze medallists, respectively, should be the main female contenders to Smith.

Other special awards in various sporting disciplines will also be announced at the gala affair.

The men nominees: Asafa Powell, Michael Frater, Usain Bolt, Brandon Simpson, Chris Gayle, Maurice Wignall and Dwight Thomas.

The women nominees: Veronica Campbell, Korine Hinds, Mardrea Hyman, Trecia-Kaye Smith, Sherone Simpson, Brigitte Foster-Hylton and Delloreen Ennis-London.
