SPANISH TOWN, St. Catherine:
THE SPANISH Town Ministers' Fraternal said yesterday it was supporting Operation Save Jamaica (OSJ), in its bid to change provisions in the Charter of Rights, which some argue may give unlimited rights to homosexuals.
Rowan Edwards, fraternal chairman, argued that it was not right for persons of the same sex to engage in "sexual perversion" and that the Bible has labelled "man-to-man" acts as sinful. He said the Church would not sit idly by and watch the country plunge into social decay.
Edwards was speaking during the annual general meeting of the fraternal at Arians Restaurant, Twickenham Park, St. Catherine.
Major Neil Lewis of OSJ and guest speaker at the function, has been working alongside a group of lawyers to have their concerns addressed by the parliamentary committee examining the charter.
PREPARE EVIDENCE
Major Lewis told the gathering that the Jamaica Forum for Lesbians, All-sexuals and Gays (J-FLAG) has been proposing that its members be given basic rights to express their sexual orientation. He said his group was calling for J-FLAG to prepare evidence that its members' behaviour was genetic or natural.
Major Lewis said it would be a social catastrophe if a line was not drawn as, in no time, same-sex marriage would become legal in Jamaica.
He told the gathering that Shirley Richards, head of the Lawyers' Christian Fellowship, a group working with his own, has been under serious pressure for the stance she has taken against the charter provisions. He said it was not that anyone was against homosexuals, but that the morality of it was wrong and must be tackled by well-thinking Jamaicans.
