Farewell oh Fresh Prince
published: Saturday | February 25, 2006

Mai'khi C'Nia

FAREWELL PERCIVAL James, thou hath closed thy innings undefeated and now thou art retreating to the player's pavilion to observe a new batsman take his guard. The significance of thy contribution to the scoreboard will become distinct over time, but at this hour go with grace, for thou hath occupied the crease for a protracted period, and thy resilience hath given the team a fighting chance.

Farewell oh Fresh Prince, for though the yeoman quality of thy tenure hath robbed thee of the fresh many moons ago, the prince hath remained; and though thou art evidently weary and battle-worn, thou hath continued to be noble and respectable amongst men, and Jamdown hath been elevated because of thy unwavering humility and civility.

Verily thou hath encountered much cheekiness in thy time, for thou hath been likened unto 'El Niño', and this was uncomplimentary in its ambiguity, for it was downright impertinent on the one hand, or utterly disparaging on the other, depending on the angle of its intended slight. But thou disregarded that moniker 'til it petered out into obscurity dragging its coiner along with it.

Yea, thou hath been declared unto Jamdown to be a prophet, and this was a mite optimistic ... besides such men art always without honour in their own land. But thou art indeed deserving to be called seer, for thou hath envisioned the new Jamdown, a place where thy people art gentle and benevolent in spirit, and art defined by revised and revamped values and attitudes. Alas, thou art not destined to be the one who will lead thy people to that utopia.

COUNTLESS JAMDOWNERS

Farewell Percival James, for no more shall the 'Mutt' snap and snarl at thy heels, and lambast thee to a pulp on the airwaves, and distort thy image in the consciousness of countless Jamdowners who tune into his special brand of electronic journalism.

Nor will the 'Poor Little Ritch Girl' any longer have cause to snipe thee on the day of the sun, thus, she will be obliged to uncover alternative targets for the telescopic sight of her sharp-shooting commentary. Verily I say to ye, Zion be with the keeper of the thread-bag, for he remain in her crosshairs, and should he find favour with the comrade delegates this day "dawg nyam his supper" for the rest of his political life.

Walk tall oh Fresh Prince, for thou deserve every instance in retirement that thou shall savour the smooth tones of Stan Getz, and an array of impresarios in thy vast jazz collection. And as thou recede into the shadows of a private life to watch thy grandchild thrive and to bond with thy offspring, may thou reconsider accepting the offer of fellow at the great place of learning, for thou art in possession of a wealth of experience and wisdom which would be invaluable in our people's quest to remain viable in a constantly evolving world community.

Go forth, document and bound thy untold executive forays, and make them available to coming generations to be analysed and to provide guidance, for thou hath been a cool head in diplomacy, and thy negotiating prowess is legendary throughout all creation. Yea, thy legacy is moot for public discourse, but no man can question or belittle thy standing amongst thy peers in command. Verily I say to ye, let this be thy true heritage unto Jamdown.

Farewell Percival James, and may any misguided soul who in thy private life regardeth thee as a boy coming to do a man's job behold the devastating power of thy willow, as did some in thy political occupation. Selah.
