THE EDITOR, Sir:AS THE Moneague lake continues to rise, from water percolating from higher elevated aquifers, it is likely that another serious threat exists. The areas inundated include lands which were used for human occupation including attendant pit toilets, which have already polluted the body of water; there are warning signs to that effect. Additionally, raw sewage from a nearby housing development continuously flows into the lake.
The effusion from the lake, through underground channels enters the headwaters of the White river. These subterranean conduits and ducts may act as filters, although the standard of the water flowing through has already been comprised and contaminated.
There should be constant testing of the quality of water from the head waters through the middle passage, where agricultural undertakings may contribute additional contaminants by wash-offs, to the hydroelectric stations and domestic applications, and in the lower valley, where in spectacular natural scenery, several enterprising ventures have provided extensive aqua sports recreation, now a major north coast attraction: albeit with possible dangers.
Would the competent authorities advise the public on the present conditions, steps to be taken (if any) and plans to monitor and maintain pristine environmental control of the White River Valley, one of nature's most beautiful gifts?
I am, etc.,
