Murder rate on the decline

COMMISSIONER OF Police Lucius Thomas yesterday disclosed that the murder rate was trending down when figures for the early part of this year are compared to a similar period last year.

Police statistics indicate that between January 1 and February 23, 2005 there were 238 murders compared to 192 over the same period this year ­ recording a 19 per cent decline. A similar decline has been recorded during the comparative period February 1 to February 23 for both years.

Commissioner Thomas, who was addressing senior journalists at his Old Hope Road headquarters in St. Andrew, also disclosed a declining murder trend in several police divisions.
