St Ann man charged with murder
published: Saturday | February 25, 2006

Devon Evans, Gleaner Writer

OCHO RIOS, St. Ann:

ONE MAN has been arrested and charged with murder in connection with the fatal shooting of 31-year-old Rayon Whitehorne, a mason of Farm Town in St. Ann.

Whitehorne's murder recently sparked a massive two-day protest in the district.

Arrested and charged is 28-year-old Xavier Lewis of a Farm Town address. His arrest follows a ruling by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). The DPP's ruling which was sent to the police on Wednesday stated that the men suspected in the murder be charged.

Lewis who was arrested and charged on Thursday, was taken before the St. Ann's Bay Resident Magistrate's Court, where he was remanded in custody until March 9.

Two other suspects are in custody in connection with the killing and senior superintendent of police in charge of St. Ann, Ray Palmer, said and identification parade is being arranged for them.

The failure of the police to make an early arrest in the killing of Whitehorne, led to two days of protests and near riot in Farm Town on February 12 and 13.

VEHICLES SET ON FIRE

One motor vehicle and a wholesale store were set on fire on the first day and the following day protesting residents set ablaze two motor vehicles and a three-bedroom house belonging to a business man they claimed was a suspect in the killing. An estimated $15 million in property was lost in the fire.

Whitehorne was shot in Farm Town on the night of February 1, while walking home from a bar where he was watching television. He was reportedly attacked by two strange men who fled the scene shortly after the shooting.
