Golding offers congratulations
published: Sunday | February 26, 2006

Golding

Monique Hepburn, News Editor

WESTERN BUREAU:

OPPOSITION LEADER Bruce Golding last night offered congratulations to president-designate of the People's National Party (PNP), Portia Simpson Miller, who emerged victorious after a closely contested presidential race.

HARD-FOUGHT CONTEST

"It was a hard-fought contest and she has emerged the winner and I sincerely offer my heartiest congratulations," said Mr. Golding.

"She has worked hard and I have no doubt that she deserves the victory that she has obtained. I look forward to my own relationship with her, working in those areas where the national interest is involved," Mr. Golding continued.

The Opposition Leader, however, called on the nation to refocus its attention on matters of development and overcoming its challenges.

POLICY DIRECTION

He said the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) would be paying close attention to Mrs. Simpson Miller's policy direction, as she has not espoused an intention to shift from the policies of the present administration.

"Nowhere in the campaigns did I get the impression that any of the contenders contemplated any major policy shift," he said.

"In a sense it is likely to be a continuation of the policies that have been pursued and that is what we will be challenging over the next few months."
