Reduction in World Cup allocation irks mayor
published: Monday | February 27, 2006

Richard Morais, Gleaner Writer

FALMOUTH, Trelawny:

MAYOR OF Falmouth, Jonathan Bartley, is furious about a recent reduction in a proposed Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF) allocation towards making the Falmouth Market compatible for Cricket World Cup 2007.

The mayor said $25 million was approved then this was reduced to $9 million and now the figure is $6 million.

COUNCIL BLAMED

"We were still willing to accept the $9 million to erect a perimeter fence, but $6 million can do nothing," he said. He reported that the reason given by the JSIF is that it has other programmes.

Mayor Bartley noted that already the council was being blamed for not starting the preparatory processes with regards to the upcoming Cricket World Cup, but he will not be taking the blame for other people's responsibilities.

The mayor has also appealed to the Government to immediately make the necessary funds available for Falmouth to be ready for Cricket World Cup, as there is not much time left.

Apart from the stadium, there are no other visible preparations and residents have complained that local leaders are not doing enough.
