LETTER OF THE DAY - For service to a new Jamaica
published: Monday | February 27, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I USE this medium to congratulate the Hon. Portia Simpson Miller, on being selected the first female president of the People's National Party. She will go on to become the first female Prime Minister of Jamaica in a short time.

What does this mean for us when the euphoria wanes?

There is no doubt that a woman rules with her heart and maybe that is what we need. Portia continues to publicly state her belief in the Lord, and I pray that she will entrust every move to Him. Faith without works is dead. This is action time. It has to be a time of healing for our nation.

The scourge of crime has divided us and made us zombies moving around in a surreal land. Peace, unity, honesty, integrity, love for all must be the hallmark of this era whether it be short or long term.

Portia by herself cannot make or break Jamaica. Each party member must uphold the tenets of the party. Portia should not approach her new position apologetically.

HARD WORK

She has risen through the ranks through hard work and should encourage all Jamaicans to do the same. The fact that she came 'out of the bowels of this nation' allows her to be touched by its infirmities.

Let us abandon the pork barrel politics and move forward with a new resolve to succeed in all we do.

Get rid of the hangers-on who give party politics a bad name. All of us need to commit to Jamaica and not to a

party. Service above self is tantamount to a new Jamaica.

I draw on a line from our National Pledge: I(we) promise to stand up for justice, brotherhood and peace. To work diligently and think creatively so that Jamaica may under God, increase in beauty, fellowship and prosperity. Remember we are 'out of many, one people'.

I am, etc.,

SHARON WILLIAMS
