THE EDITOR, Sir:
I WONDER, sadly, how long Jamaica will stay in the dark ages when it comes to the right of the individual to consenting adult sexual expression.
I am dismayed by the stances of Christian groups who seek to enforce their standard of behaviour on everyone else.
What if people of other beliefs tried to enforce their norms and standards on us who call ourselves Christians?
It should be integral to a democratic, pluralistic society that everyone should be free, within the bounds of not causing harm to another, to exercise freedom of expression, religious or otherwise.
And if Christians are so concerned about the moral decay of our society, why is there no campaign to criminalise adultery, for instance?
After all, someone who commits adultery is breaking a contract, both legal and religious/moral! Isn't that worse than someone having consensual sex with a same-sex adult? Why should the Government have any say in what goes on in my bedroom?
Suppose some group decided that oral sex was unnatural, should we pass a law against that? These are questions that as well-thinking Jamaicans we should ask ourselves.
We are simply exchanging one form of prejudice for another when we, especially those of us who call ourselves Christians, make homosexuals the Samaritans of our time. And yes, I'm heterosexual and Christian.
I am, etc.,
