THE FIRST renewal of the Shipping Industry Benefit Golf Tournament, to be played on Saturday, April 22, at the Caymanas Golf and Country Club, is attracting good support, with Kingston Wharves Limited (KWL) leading the way as Platinum Sponsor of the prestigious tournament.
In handing over KWL's sponsorship cheque, Grantley Stephenson, chairman and chief executive officer of Kingston Wharves, expressed his company's full support for the tournament that will benefit the Marcus Garvey Basic School in Greenwich Town. The school has been adopted by the Shipping Association of Jamaica (SAJ) and plays an integral role in preparing the children of that community for primary school.
Other sponsors who are supporting the event include: APM Terminals (Jamaica) Limited; the Hilton Kingston; the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel; Port Computer Services; Assessment Recoveries Limited; Seafreight Agencies; Seaboard Marine; Lannaman & Morris; Rosh Marketing; S&S Marketing; Digicel; Lascelles Wines; Caribbean Broilers; Dairy Industries; Totally Male; Protection & Security; Chaddad's Tyres; Tyres R Us and Goodyear.
President of the SAJ, Michael Bernard, notes that "the outpouring of support for this benefit tournament in aid of the Marcus Garvey Basic School shows that Jamaica's shipping sector and our partners in the business community take seriously their role as corporate citizens who are sensitive to the needs of fellow Jamaicans."
MANY PRIZES
This 18-hole, 7/8 Stableford tournament has generated great interest among golfers, no doubt related to the elegant trophies, attractive prizes, valuable tee gifts (including designer golf shirts, bags and caps), a hole-in-one mega-prize, and the prize-giving luncheon being offered to players in this event.
Not only is the majestic SAJ Gold Cup being offered to the overall champion, but also sectional trophies for the winners and valuable prizes for the four runners-up in the ladies' category, men's handicap 0-9, men's handicap 10-18 and men's handicap 19-24.
Last year's overall champion, Stephen Chang, and ladies champion, Jodi Munn-Barrow, are expected to defend their titles.
