Glenmuir, KC win
published: Tuesday | February 28, 2006

Robert Bailey, Gleaner Writer

GLENMUIR HIGH won the ISSA/Malta Under-16, and Kingston College (KC) claimed the under-14 title in all-island finals at Campion College yesterday.

Glenmuir defeated defending champions Calabar 3-2, while KC had to come from behind twice to defeat Denbigh High 4-2.

In the under-16 final, Matthew Ashman scored first for Glenmuir in the 23rd minute before adding a second eight minutes later. But on the stroke of half-time, substitute Derrick Wilson pulled one back for Calabar to make it 2-1.

After the break Glenmuir pressed for more goals and made it 3-1 six minutes after the restart when Martin Booth headed home a corner kick from Jan-Ross Doley.

Calabar dominated the rest of the game and squandered a number of chances before Wilson scored again for Glenmuir after 77 minutes.

"This one victory was a really good victory for us after missing out on the daCosta Cup and we didn't get a chance to try for the Oliver Shield, so I am really delighted and happy for all of the players," Glenmuir's coach, Warren Simpson, said.

Calabar coach Canute Fagan said: "I am really disappointed because we came here to defend our title and that didn't materialise. But what I am really interested in is that the guys learnt from it."

In the under-14 game, which kicked off first, Joseph Hall and Maxwell Green opened the scoring for Denbigh, but Prince Samuels, Mario Martin, Christopher Harrison and Rohan Roye responded for KC to complete a comfortable victory.
